Rhosygilwen’s second Schubertiade kicks off on Friday 24th October and runs for three days until the 26th October. Led by pianist Llyr Williams, this festival has quickly become recognized internationally as an opportunity to enjoy the music of one of Chamber music’s most loved composers.

The weekend begins with Swansong (Swanengesang), regarded by many as Schubert’s farewell to the world and based on a collection of 13 poems. Stephen Loges the German bass-baritone will sing the lieder accompanied by Llyr Williams on piano. This performance begins at 8 pm.

On Saturday the 25th October (8 pm) Llyr Williams plays one of Schubert’s early sonatas in A major which is lyrical, buoyant and poignant fitting the image of a young Schubert in love, living in a summery Austrian countryside.

On Sunday 26th at 2pm, one of Pembrokeshire’s own rising musical stars, Lee Mottram, play a clarinet recital accompanied by Llyr on piano. Followed by The Gould Piano Trio at 6 pm, playing Schubert’s B-flat and E-flat piano trios. The Gould Trio are Ben Frith (piano), Lucy Gould (cello) and Alice Neary (violin).

The original Schubertiades were often informal affairs with music, song and poetry and to keep with that tradition the Penfro poets will read some of their compositions based on the theme of Schubert’s Swansong, accompanied by Resident Bard, Diarmuid Johnson.

Newport’s cordon bleu chef, Guy Morris will serve memorable preconcert suppers on all three days at 6.15 pm on Friday and Saturday and Sunday lunch at 12 pm on the 26th Oct. Book by calling 01239841387. All tickets are bookable on line on Rhosygilwen.co.uk with no extra charges.
