Coracles and the Teifi
An exhibition of paintings and collage by Deborah Withey
After an award-winning career as a creative director, designer and
illustrator in the United States, Deborah Withey emigrated to Wales in 2009 to
set up a studio and home in St. Davids, Pembrokeshire. She has exhibited
across the USA, in New York and London, and her work is held in private
collections around the world. This is her 10th exhibition in Wales.
Deb says of ‘Coracles and the Teifi’, “A coracle is a hand-made work of art.
Each one, like the pieces in this exhibition, is an expression of its maker.
I work to create emotive visuals that capture both coracle fishing and
the character of the Teifi by combining bold compositions with the use of
colour, movement and texture.”
“I’ve chosen to launch this exhibition alongside the Teifi where the river,
the boats, and their place in the history, spirit and life of the people are
most understood.”
‘Coracles and the Teifi’, is a continuation of Deborah’s Croesi/Crossings
series, which has been supported by the Arts Council of Wales. The
exhibition takes place at Hammet House, Llechryd, Cardigan, on 22
August 2014 and runs through 1 November 2014.
The exhibition launch on the 22nd is open to everyone and will be a
celebration of creativity, craftsmenship and local food. The event will begin
with a champagne & canapé reception to launch the exhibition, followed
by the opportunity to hear Deb talk about her work and a Cilgerran
coracler talk about the tradition of coracle fishing on the Teifi.
