The Abbey Shakespeare Players return to St Dogmaels for their 28th annual production with The Merchant of Venice from August 6 to 9.
This is one of Shakespeare’s best-known plays, combining romantic comedy, court-room thriller and clash of cultures. The merchant Antonio risks life and limb to help his friend Bassanio pursue the love of the wealthy heiress Portia. Ancient grudges come into play as bonds are made and betrayed among the colourful characters of a city built on hard bargains and slippery decadence.
With live music, a lively cast will perform The Merchant of Venice in the majestic ruins of St Dogmaels Abbey. As the sun sets over the Teifi and seagulls wheel on the sea breeze, you will be transported to the bustling canals and shady alleyways of Venice.
Performances will take place each evening from Wednesday to Saturday in St Dogmaels Abbey at 8pm.
Tickets are available in advance from the Box Office, Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan, www.mwldan.co.uk, tel. 01239 621200, or on the door, price £10 (£8 concessions). Tickets are unnumbered; audience members are advised to arrive early to obtain a good seat.
