St Cynllo's Church, Llangynllo is holding a two day commemorative event to mark the centenary of the beginning of WW1, on August 3 and 4.

On Sunday August 3 events feature open art and poetry competitions on the theme of "War and Peace" as well as a number of themed art and photographic exhibitions inside the church and stalls outside .

Church member Sue Wright is preparing a Commemorative Book to honour those from the Parish and surrounding district who gave their lives and served the war effort 100 years ago. Also as a lasting reminder the church will be compiling a booklet in which memories of this two-day event and those who took part in it.

There will be refreshments available throughout both days, including recipes from that time), and profits will be shared equally between the church and the charity Combat Stress.

On Monday August 4 a commemorative service led by Rev Gareth Reid will be held at 2pm.

Members of the Newcastle Emlyn branch of the Royal British Legion, and Emlyn Scout Group will read the names of the fallen and light remembrance candles in their memory. The service will include two hymns sung at the service to unveil the war shrine in 1917.

The service will be followed by a concert at around 3pm featuring Woodthorpe Music, who will be presenting compositions by six 'Great War' composers, interspersed with readings of the winning entries from the previous day's poetry and writing competition as well as a specially crafted piece by author John Franks.
