Newport’s Ffair Gurig Charities Week is to host one of Wales’ premier male voice choirs, to include a World War One Centenary Commemoration.

Newport will play host to Cor Meibion De Cymru (South Wales Male Choir) who will perform a concert as part of the town’s charity fund raising activities during its annual Ffair Gurig week,.

The choir will perform a concert on Saturday June 21 in the Memorial Hall.

This will be the fourth visit of Cor Meibion De Cymru to the town. The choir’s last concert in Newport was in 2010 and it was warmly received by an appreciative audience and the choristers enjoyed the occasion so much, they are delighted at been given the opportunity to return.

The concert will be held in Newport’s Memorial Hall as the second half of the event will focus on a commemoration to the centenary for the start of World War One and the choir’s repertoire will contain a medley of popular World War One songs.

The concert will also feature four young local soloists Esyllt Thomas, Angharad James, Marged and Ffion Rees. Tickets are on sale at Newport Post Office.

Mayor of Newport, Alderman Peter Smith said: "The town’s Ffair Gurig week forms a significant part of Newport’s heritage and tradition It is also very pleasing to note that a portion of the concert funds raised will go towards our Mayor’s Charities Fund. As is the custom, at the end of the year, money from the fund will be distributed to various activity groups within Newport and the immediate surrounding area."

Activities planned for the week beginning June 21 include a Street Market on Monday June 23 at 9am, a Quiz Night at Newport Boat Club on Monday June 23 at 7.30pm, Ysgol Bro Ingli Sports Day Thursday June 26 at 1pm and a Mayoral Ball at Newport Golf Club on Saturday 28th June 2014 at 7.30pm
