Span Arts’ long running monthly SpanJazz club returns to host the Philip Clouts Quartet on May 21 at The Dingle Club, Narberth.
Philip Clouts is a pianist, composer and frontman born in South Africa. The Philip Clouts quartet has garnered widespread acclaim for their accomplished jazz that draws influence from African and Latin music as well as classic jazz such as Charlie Parker and others.
Clouts is at heart a jazz musician and on his new album he focuses on a more traditional acoustic setting, that of the quartet. The band features the engaging London-based alto saxophonist Carlos Lopez-Real. He leaves not only the sounds of exuberant latin or lyrical post-bop styles ringing in your ears but also the kind of cryptic grooves derived from both Indian classical music and New York’s 1980s M-Base Collective.
Span Arts’ monthly Jazz Club is held in the cosy setting of The Dingle, Narberth, with a selection of real ales and Pembrokeshire Pete serving his delicious made to order wood fired pizzas.
Tickets are£7 in advance, or £6 for members and concession and are available online at span-arts.org.uk or from the box office on 01834 869323. Alternatively they can be purchased for £1 more on the door.
