As well as a full live programme, Fishguard’s community venue Theatr Gwaun is serving up a filmic feast in May. Here are just a few of the highlights.....

FromMay 4to 7, get ready for 300: Rise of an Empire (15), an all-action thriller that is easier to watch than it is to recite the character list! Greek general Themistokles leads the charge against invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

The winner of the Oscar for Best Documentary is next up, with the magnificent 20 Feet From Stardom (12A) showing from May 11 to 14. Back-up singers live in a world that lies just beyond the spotlight. Their voices bring harmony to the biggest bands in popular music, but we've had no idea who these singers are, until now. Including interviews with big names, including Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder, and lots of concert footage, this is a film that combines superb music with history, and doesn’t look away from the racism and sexism that kept the industry going.

On Thursday May 15 “for one night only” as they say, don’t miss the Oscar-nominated and BAFTA award-winning American Hustle (15) .Fantastic lead performances from Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams, and an extraordinary story of conmen, the FBI, the mafia and New Jersey in the 1970s, this film looks and sounds eye-popping.

By contrast, from May 18 to 21, Svengali (15) is a warm-hearted British comedy with a Welsh accent, telling the story of Dixie (Martin Freeman) who leaves a humble Welsh mining town for the bright lights of London, intent on becoming the manager of the best band in the world.

Finally, no Bank Holiday would be complete without a real family film. The beautiful The King & the Mockingbird (U) is showing on May 25, 26 and May 28 at 6.30pm, and May 27 at 2.30pm. The King And The Mockingbird tells the story of a wicked king who loves a beautiful shepherdess in a painting on his wall, but she is in love with a chimneysweep from another artwork. At night the paintings come to life, and together they attempt to flee. Hiding at the top of the palace, they help Mr Bird who’s become caught up in one of the King’s cruel traps, before leading the police on a wild chase. A really charming animation, a world away from Disney and Pixar.

Tickets are £5.50 (adult), £3.50 (child) and £15 (family) and can be reserved at the Theatr Gwaun Box Office. All films start at 7.30pm unless stated otherwise.
