Ten of Wales’ finest traditional singers and musicians come together for SongChain, a tour of Wales during April 2014, which will be at Theatr Mwldan on Thursday 3 April at 7.30pm. The performance explores and celebrates the roots and heritage of folk music in Wales.

The project which is a co-production between Theatr Mwldan and musician/producer Gerard Kilbride looks at the influences and relationships that have kept Welsh Folk music alive and the geography, language and culture of a musical nation. Illustrating how traditional music evolves through being shared and played, the chain is a sequence of interlinking solos, duets and trios, combining a variety of instruments and musical styles and creating unique interpretations and combinations of Welsh music.

The SongChain project centres on the traditions of Welsh Folk music; where compositions, songs, melodies and tunes are passed on, learned and re-learned, evolving through generations and shared with other artists and musicians.

The tour brings together ten noted musicians from Wales, for an evening which begins with an ancient melody played on the welsh crwth. The first musician is joined by another to form a duet, each giving a bilingual introduction to themselves and the music they play. Journeying across Wales through music and song, ancient and modern, the musicians on stage will tell a story of how they learn from each other, exploring the way we pass music to each other from person to person. The pattern repeats and varies throughout the evening to create unique performances and collaborations of solos, duets and trios. Each song is a link in the chain to the next or previous piece of music or to the performer, the evening ending in a collaboration between all musicians.

Whether you’re new to Welsh folk, or an established fan, you can enjoy a fabulous experience in the company of who’s who of the nation’s traditional artists - Gwyneth Glyn (Ghazalaw), Robert Evans (Bragod, Pwngk), Delyth Jenkins (DnA, Aberjabber), Dylan Fowler (Taith, Alaw), Gwilym Bowen Rhys (Y Bandana, Plu), Gwenan Gibbard, Jamie Smith (Jamie Smith’s Mabon, Alaw, Barrule), Patrick Rimes (Calan), Stephen Rees (Ar Log, Crasdant, Triawd) and Beth Williams-Jones (Calan).
