Young Music Makers of Dyfed will be the devoting the first weekend of April to celebrate the talent of young musicians from across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire.

The charity is staging two events at Neuadd y Dderwen, Rhosygilwen, nearCilgerran on April 5 and 6.

On Saturday April 6,7.30pm, the Galliard Ensemble will be giving a concert marking the culmination of this year’s Dyfed Young Composers’ scheme, recently shortlisted for Best Classical Music Education Initiative in the British Music Teacher Awards 2014.

Since last September composer Lynne Plowman has been working with students from Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, providing them with help and support as they compose a piece for wind quintet. During the first week of April, the Galliard Ensemble will perform many of the resulting works in a series of school showcases whilst the concert will feature those scores selected by the renowned composer Gabriel Jackson.

Sunday April 7, 3pm, marks the final of this year’s Young Musician of Dyfed competition. The six finalists were shortlisted following a day of masterclasses led by viola player Matthew Jones and pianist Andrew Wilson-Dickson last November.

Open to instrumental players under the age of 19, the competition has provided a valuable launch pad for many musicians who have gone on to forge successful careers as musicians, among them Catrin Finch and Claire Jones, both of whom served as official harpists to HRH the Prince of Wales.
