Newport Memorial Hall is starting 2014 with several events to make sure you don’t come down with the January blues.

A joint venture with Menter Iaith Sir Benfro with ‘Bilingual Bingo’ will take place on Friday January 31, 7pm.

The last bingo held was a success and it is a fun way to spend an evening and see how many Welsh numbers you know. There are great prizes to be won and all money raised will go towards the Wales Air Ambulance.

On Saturday February 1, 6.30pm, Newport Films presents ‘Gravity’ (12A), starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and which has been nominated for 10 Oscars.

The film about two astronauts left floating in space after their shuttle is destroyed will have you on the edge of your seats in this visually stunning, heart pounding thriller. Adults £4, Children under 18, £3. There will be a bar and free snacks.

The popular table top and jumble sale is back! on Saturday February 15, 10am-2pm. Come along to see if you can grab a bargain or just want to come and socialise and have a cup of coffee/tea and cake. Entry is £1 including the raffle draw.

On Friday February 21 the hall welcomes the ‘Tree of leaf and flame’ by Daniel Mordon, who is one of the UK’S most popular storytellers.

Spellbinding storytelling and dazzling musicianship come together in this unique retelling of The Mabinogi – the oldest stories of Britain. Haunting and dreamlike, these tales link two worlds: the everyday world we all inhabit, and Annwn, a mysterious Otherworld where nothing is as it seems.

Daniel Mordon’s ‘Tree of leaf and flame’ won the Wales Books Council Tir Na Nog Prize in 2013. Tickets £9, Concessions £8.
