Burton at the Guildhall
2:22pm Thursday 31st October 2013 in What's on
COMING to Cardigan Guildhall on 16th November, is a show which has won not only rave reviews, but a Hollywood Award for the most outstanding international actor for Rhodri Miles playing the part of Richard Burton. For Welsh actor, Miles, who plays the central role in the play ‘Burton’, the praise heaped upon him for this performance is a fantastic plus to what he really wanted, which was the opportunity to play the part. ‘I’ve always wanted to play Richard Burton,’ he says. The actor himself was born in Pontarddulais, just six miles away from Burton’s birthplace and he was conscious of his hero from a young age. ‘He was a great thespian actor and when you think of Welsh iconic figures he is one of them.’ Miles himself is also a name in the acting world, and has been seen in many stage productions, and on television in programmes like Torchwood and more recently the much praised Atlantis.
Gwynne Edwards who has written the play ‘Burton’ intended it to vividly depict the actor’s often hilarious, melancholic, self-deprecating take on life, from humble beginnings to Hollywood mega-stardom, culminating in his acrimonious first divorce from Elizabeth Taylor, which happened not long after they both appeared together in the movie version of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood. Burton’s claim that he was ‘put on this Earth to raise sheer hell,’ has over the years, helped to shape his reputation as a difficult man, but there was so much more to him than that, as can be seen in this brilliant play.
Tickets for the show, on for one night only at 7.30pm on Saturday 16 November are £7 and can be booked on 01239 615554
