Global night of music at Queens Hall
1:21pm Monday 14th October 2013 in What's on
IN a rare and exciting collaboration, Span Arts and Torch Theatre are bringing some of the world’s greatest musicians to the Queens Hall on Sunday, October 27, 7.30pm.
The two groups, hand-picked from prestigious international showcases appearing at WOMEX 2013 in Cardiff, make a special stage appearance in Narberth as part of the Wales-wide Horizons tour, co-produced by Creu Cymru and Theatr Mwldan.
The 13th edition of WOMEX, the major annual international music industry event takes place in Cardiff from 23 – 27 October, presented by Cerdd Cymru / Music Wales. Over 30 artists and groups from across the world will be performing, and more than 2,500 delegates from over 90 countries will attend.
Heading up Narberth’s tour date is Ghazalaw, a unique and exquisite collaboration that brings together the sublime Indian Ghazal and the Welsh folk traditions. The six-piece is led by Mumbai singer Tauseef Akhtar and Cardiff singer-songwriter Gwyneth Glyn, who weave the love poetry of their two ancient traditions together. They are accompanied by harmonium, rising star Georgia Ruth on Welsh harp, Manas Kumar on Indian violin, Ashish Jha on tabla and Sanjoy Das on guitar. Ghazalaw is sponsored by Air India.
Also on the bill is the magnificent Ballet Nimba (Wales/Guinea). 100% African – made in Wales; the compelling Ballet Nimba, founded by director and choreographer Idrissa Camara (performing here as a 7-piece ensemble) are self-styled ambassadors of West African musical culture. Their excitingly dynamic show combines furious percussive beats, soaring vocals, mesmerising flute and rootsy acoustics with acrobatic dance from the African Ballet tradition thrown in for good measure. Outstanding entertainment!
Deborah Keyser, Director of Creu Cymru said: “The tour will give audiences across Wales - who couldn’t make it to WOMEX 13, Cardiff for the main event - a chance to see the very best in World Music acts outside of the capital city, together with some of Wales’ finest musicians, and to welcome these exceptional visiting artists to the magnificent network of arts venues that exist throughout Wales.”
Tickets are £12(£10 members and concessions), available from www.span-arts.org.uk , or call 01834 869323.
