Reds nearly there

Newcastle Emlyn 6 Goytre FC 2 MacWhirter Welsh League Division Three A full complement of points from home encounters with lowly Seven Sisters and Abertillery this week will spell promotion for the Reds after eight seasons in the bottom division.

After a dismal run of results the Reds completed back-to-back successes as they played the ball accurately to feet and reduced the visitors to chasing shadows for lengthy periods.

Exerting pressure from the first whistle the homesters buzzed in attack and Steffan Davies hit the crossbar from a corner in the second minute.

They opened their account after eight minutes when a Jimmy James free kick was fumbled by goalkeeper Sean Jollisse who helped the ball into the net.

Goytre were back on level terms within six minutes from a breakaway move. Peter Blain did well to parry a shot but the ball fell kindly for Rob Surtees who picked his spot.

The setback served only to spur on the Reds who regained the lead when Jonathan Clarke put Mike Preddy through.

Clarke was again the provider when Steffan Davies hit an unstoppable volley into the roof of the net and it went to 4-1 when skipper Sean Jones released Steffan Davies who side-footed past Jollisse.

As the same tempo continued during the second period Preddy netted a fifth goal and Kevin Morgan completed the scoring.

In injury time home defender Osian Williams was adjudged to have brought down Surtees and Darren Raynes converted the resulting penalty.
