Eira Kedward, during a Nicaragua Evening, gave a slide-show in the Brynberian Community Centre of her work. The slide-show, live music and varied and delicious food raised £420 for the work of the Brynberian sister community centre on the island of Omotepe. Eira, through slides and her added comments, showed the importance for the local people of developing practical and sustainable systems within their community. The slides showed the stunning scenery as well as the birds, animals and flora of the area. Eira added expert comments on the culture of the community and the friendship an welcome of the people in that area.

The National Park is providing generous help for the Festival by enabling its rangers to lead some of the walks. One pub walk offers an experience which will be especially memorable. In past years some visitors have described it as unique. The pub walk for welsh speakers and learners includes a visit to Bessie's in the Gwaun Valley. Bessie has become the stuff of legend, a link to a vanished or at least a fast disappearing rural past. The practices and rituals of country life in the hills and outlying areas survive but they are under threat. Bessie reflects the reality of that past. "We drank beer, ate some crisps, sat in the sun and it is an experience we won't forget," said a visitor from the U.S.A. "The beer is better than all this junk lager they serve up in cans." There are stories about Bessie and visits to her pub which now reach around the world. With them goes an affection for Bessie, her pub, her beer and for the the uniqueness of the personality that lies behind them.

Newport Bay Spring Festival, from 1st to 4th May, this year celebrates the delights and challenges of Pembrokeshire outdoors. The compact, clear and varied leaflet describing events is a model of its kind. The photograph on the cover is of slim children competing in a race and anyone searching for physical challenge will find the opportunity inside. Events include cycling: a 45 mile loop followed by an optional 35 mile loop with spectacular hill, valley and coastal scenery; a junior mountain bike race with "mud and thrills" in the shadow of Carningli; a gentle paced Family Cycle Ride led by an experienced instructor. The running is similarly varied to test the fit and competitive while encouraging others to try less demanding events. Kayaking, an activity some speculate may soon overtake cycling in popularity in this area, provides a chance to compete or just be under the spell of the spectacular cliff and river scenery of the area. A "taster session" in the estuary is available.

'Green Drinks' is a world-wide phenomenon, with around 500 cities holding regular 'green drinks' sessions. These are opportunities for people with an interest in any aspect of the environment to get together, share views, news and make contacts in a relaxed pleasurable setting. The idea has reached Pembrokeshire with a series of monthly green drinks and film sessions planned for Newport, and starting next Wednesday, April 15th.
