School Production – Hot Mikado The production team at Ysgol Bro Gwaun are preparing to perform ‘Hot Mikado’ with a modern twist on this original Japanese 1940’s classic by Gilbert and Sullivan, adding much more jazz, swing, hot gospel and scorching torch songs to this unique show.

6th Form Trip to ‘Hot Mikado’ On Friday 6th November, 15 Sixth Formers went to see a professional performance of ‘Hot Mikado’ in the Arts Centre, Aberystwyth, as part of their preparations for the School’s production at Christmas. Amongst the pupils were those who will be playing the main characters in ‘Hot Mikado’, and members of the production cast.

Open Evening Explosions in laboratories, puzzles to solve, foods to taste, quizzes to answer, strength to measure and a variety of opportunities to test skills and knowledge were on offer at Ysgol Bro Gwaun’s Open Evening, on Thursday, 15th October.

Trefnwyd ymweliad Hoci a Phêl-rwyd i Miami ac Orlando yng Nghorffennaf. Roedd yn brofiad wych i’r 26 merch, i chwarae yn erbyn y timau gwahanol yn yr UDA. Dechreuodd y gemau wrth i’r tim Pêl-rwyd chwarae yn erbyn tim dan 21 USA, cyfle arbennig i’r merched i chwarae yn erbyn tim cenedlaethol, ac wedyn tim Pacesetter NC. Chwaraedd y tim hoci gemau cyffrous yn erbyn Tim Hoci Aventura, ac tim Canol Gorllewin Florida.

Year 6 pupils from the primary schools visited Ysgol Bro Gwaun on the 3rd July. The pupils worked in teams using thinking skills to solve problems in a Maths Challenge Competition. Certificates were awarded to the members of the winning teams. The pupils also participated in a Treasure Hunt, with all teams successfully locating the treasure.

On Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th June, the Year 10 GCSE Geography group accompanied by Mr Haynes and Ms Fulthorpe carried out fieldwork on the River Gwaun. The groups were collecting a range of primary data in order to answer a series of hypothesis. Work on writing up the findings will now begin in earnest.

WINNERS of THE BATTLE of the BANDS 2009 Last weekend SUZZANE MCGREGOR and LUCINDA JOHN-DUARTE, performed at and were successful in winning the prestigious "Battle of the Bands" competition in Fishguard. The girls won the first prize of £350. They now progress to another national competition in , on. We wish them every success.

Noson Lawen Ysgol Bro Gwaun 21/5/09 Mae bwrlwm a phrysurdeb Eisteddfod yr Urdd 2009 yn fyw yn Ysgol Bro Gwaun eleni eto. Ers misoedd bellach, mae’r disgyblion a’r athrawon wedi bod yn gweithio yn galed iawn er mwyn paratoi at yr Wyl fawr yng Nghaerdydd.

Ten Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils from Ysgol Bro Gwaun competed in the 5x60 Street Dance Competition at Fishguard Leisure Centre recently. They competed against pupils from STP, Preseli, Milford, Greenhill and Pembroke School's in two categories, Quads and Group Dances. All performed really well. The participants were: Alys Lewis, Callum Morris, Cara Morris, Sam Harries, Lauren James, Shaquille Williams, Fay Ford, Eilish John, Elen Rees, and Carly Lamb.

Yn ystod yr wythnos ddiwethaf bu disgyblion Ysgol Bro Gwaun yn brysur iawn yn cystadlu yn Eisteddfod yr Urdd a gynhaliwyd eleni ym Mae Caerdydd. Ar Ddydd Mercher Mai 27ain, bu Catrin Raymond yn cystadlu ar yr Unawd Alaw Werin blynyddoedd 7-9, a bu Catherine Daniel yn cystadlu ar y Llefaru unigol i ddysgwyr blynyddoedd 7-9.

On Wednesday 20th May, 4 teams from YBG competed in the Pembrokeshire Schools’ Athletic Team Competition. YBG teams performed extremely well against the other 8 secondary schools from Pembrokeshire. Mr. Roach was very impressed with the pupil’s effort and performance in the track and field events.

A large number of pupils achieved Silver Awards at Easter enabling them to take part in a non School uniform day on Monday. Silver Awards are awarded to pupils with very good behaviour and attendance over a period of 2 terms.

Year 7 pupils attended a performance by the Small World Theatre, Cardigan. The performance focused upon environmental issues and involved acting and puppetry. 30 pupils also attended a workshop exploring the themes from the performance.

A successful meeting was held for parents and pupils interested in attending the Trochi Project in June. The Trochi Project is a five week Welsh immersion course for pupils intending to follow courses through the medium of Welsh. The School looks forward to welcoming the pupils of June 1st.

A meeting of the School Council was held on Thursday 7th May in Room 34. Jonathon James was in the Chair and Rebekah Moore was Secretary. There was no agenda as it was regarded as an open meeting and a number of items were raised. The Chair also gave a detailed analysis of the feedback following the collation of the questionnaire from the Leisure Centre. 192 replies had been received detailing the use the pupils made of the facility. At the end of the meeting, the Council Officials were thanked for the diligent manner they had performed their duties and they were extended good wishes for their forthcoming examinations.

Ysgol Bro Gwaun’s Hall was the venue for a most relaxed and enjoyable Certificate Evening, chaired by Mr. Oliver Johns, Chair of the Governing Body. The Guest Speaker, Mr Mansel Raymond, MBE, was introduced by Mr Johns as a past pupil whose pioneering and entrepreneurial work in farming make him an excellent role model for young people today.

Year 12 maths students from Ysgol Bro Gwaun enjoyed an AS level maths conference at the University of Glamorgan on 31st March. They participated in exam paper practice sessions and listened to talks on exam techniques and careers involving maths.

Cynhaliwyd Eisteddfod Offerynnol y Sir nos Iau 19eg o Fawrth yn Neuadd Treletert. Yno bu Jason Venables-John yn llwyddiannus yn y gystadleuaeth piano i flynyddoedd 10 i 13, a chafodd Amelia Johnson yr un llwyddiant yn y gystadleuaeth telyn i flynyddoedd 10 i 13. Cynhaliwyd yr Eisteddfod ddawns yn Ysgol Uwchradd Bro Gwaun, Abergwaun ar nos Fawrth y 17eg, a’r Eisteddfod Uwchradd ac Aelwydydd yn Ysgol y Preseli ar y 13eg o Fawrth. Cafodd pawb hwyl dda iawn ar y dawnsio yn unigol ac mewn grwˆp, a’r safon yn uchel iawn. Llwyddodd Corey Harries i gael cyntaf yn ei gystadleuaeth o ddawnsio disgo unigol i flynyddoedd 10 -13. Members of the School Senior Rugby Team and a small number of staff were recently involved in a literacy project, sponsored by both Pembrokeshire County Council and Basic Skills Cymru. The outcome was a number of RUGBY READER posters, featuring the boys promoting literacy, with the aim of increasing the popularity of reading with younger boys.

Crime of Your Life Pupils in Year 7 have taken part in ‘Crime of Your Life’. Pupils viewed a powerful performance by Performing Arts students from Pembrokeshire College. They then attended 4 workshops with Magistrates, A Young Offender, Victim Support and the Police. The session enabled pupils to discuss their findings and feelings about the performance and to find out more about the legal system and how it affects them.

Seven Pembrokeshire writers are showcasing their work at a book signing coffee morning at the Royal Oak, Fishguard on Thursday, 23rd April. The event will include short readings and visitors will have the opportunity not only to buy signed copies of the books but also to meet and chat with the authors. Doors open at 10am and the event is open to all. The occasion will mark the formal launch of two illustrated collections of poetry and a short story, published by the group’s publishing imprint, Acorns Publishing.

Welsh Indoor Athletics Championships, Cardiff: Lauren Bell, Year 9 and Amy Leahy, Year 7 won their respective races in the Welsh Indoor Athletics Championships in Cardiff on 8th February 2009. Lauren came first in the Under 15’s 300m and Amy came first in the Under 13’s 60m; both are now the Welsh Champions for these events in their age group.

A meeting was held on 22nd January for Parents and Guardians of pupils in Year 9 to outline the changes to the 14+ curriculum. This was followed, on January 28th, by the Parent / Guardians Evening which enabled parents and guardians to discuss their child’s progress, following their Intermediate Reports, and options at 14+ with their subject and form teachers, the Careers Adviser – Mrs Anne Fraser, their Year Progress Manager – Miss Alana Finn (temporary) and with the Headteacher – Ms Christine Wright.
