School Production – Hot Mikado The production team at Ysgol Bro Gwaun are preparing to perform ‘Hot Mikado’ with a modern twist on this original Japanese 1940’s classic by Gilbert and Sullivan, adding much more jazz, swing, hot gospel and scorching torch songs to this unique show.

This year’s annual production will take place on Tuesday the 15th and Wednesday the 16th of December (matinee on the 14th for Primary Schools). Buy your tickets in advance to make sure you don’t miss out on the bi-lingual colourful show that is certain to provide an evening out for the entire family.

Adults: £4.00 Concession: £2.50 RYLA 2009 Two Year 12 students attended the annual Rotary Leadership course in the Brecon Beacons, at the Dolygaer Outdoor Centre, during the Summer holidays. Gemma Davies and Hayley Lewis recently gave a presentation to the local Rotary Club that had sponsored them to attend. The President and members were extremely impressed with their presentation and equally the excellent reports received from the Centre staff. The two students had had a really positive, enjoyable learning experience and thoroughly enjoyed engaging with students from across Wales.

YSGOL BRO GWAUN PTA GOLF DAY This year the tournament will take place on June 12th. Thanks to the support of Mr Noott, the event will again be staged at Newport Links Golf Club. Anyone wanting to put a team in should contact Mr Willington, at the school.

Urdd trip to Wales vs Samoa On Friday, 13th November, 23 Ysgol Bro Gwaun pupils, with pupils from Whitland and Ysgol Bro Myrddin, travelled to the Millennium Stadium to watch the Wales vs Samoa game, Wales’ first game after losing to the All Blacks.

The atmosphere in Cardiff was very exciting, and there were over 58,000 supporters in the Stadium. Leigh Halfpenny was Wales’ only try scorer and he also won penalty points; Dan Biggar also won penalty kick points. With the final score at Wales 17, Samoa 13, we all returned home pleased to have seen a Welsh Victory. Thank you to the Urdd and Welsh Department staff for organising the trip and accompanying the pupils to the game.

West Wales Hockey Squad Three girls from Ysgol Bro Gwaun have been selected to train with the West Wales Hockey Squad following the U16 South Wales County Schoolgirl Finals. The successful girls are Charlotte Harries, Chloe Sinnott and Ffion Williams, all from Year 11. Congratulations.

Under 16 Hockey Tournament Ysgol Bro Gwaun hosted one pool of the Under 16 Tournament last week. It was a very strong pool, and Ysgol Bro Gwaun won 1-0 against Sir Thomas Picton School, drew 0-0 with St David’s School and drew 2-2 with Ysgol y Preseli. An excellent result for the girls. Goals were scored by Charlotte Harries and Ffion Williams.

Under 14 Hockey Tournament This week Ysgol Bro Gwaun’s Under 14 team played in the Pembrokeshire tournament. Bro Gwaun played excellent games, winning 8-1 against Tasker Milward School. They won 5-0 against Milford School, and 4-0 against Pembroke School. Ysgol Bro Gwaun won their pool and got through to the final against Sir Thomas Picton School. After a well contested match, unfortunately Ysgol Bro Gwaun lost 2-0. Goals were scored by Alys Lewis, Rebecca Hayes and Mollie Griffiths. Well done, girls.

Mock Election.

Year 10s election campaigns have been the focus of PSHE lessons this term. These culminated in a Mock Election held on Monday. There were 5 candidates standing for election. Their campaign policies were varied and included Healthy Eating, Sporting Activities and facilities for young people. All candidates gave an election speech which included Power Point presentations and even a Rap. The winner of the election, Carwyn Reed, was announced by Cllr Huw George. The winners of the best display were 10G.
