Man treks desert to stop bombs

12:39pm Thursday 20th September 2001

A Greenwich Council officer will trek across a south African desert to raise money for anti-land mine work in Namibia.

Geoff Manger, 48, an insurance manager in the council's finance department, is currently half-way to his target of £1,500.

The cash will go to the Mines Advisory Group, which is dedicated to removing landmines and other unexploded weapons in countries including Angola, Cambodia and Iraq.

The challenge, between October 14 and 20, is to walk 85 miles across the Namib Desert in temperatures reaching 85 Fahrenheit. Anyone wishing to sponsor Geoff should call him on 020 8921 5194.
